Go Green for Thanksgiving
By Maya Perry

Thanksgiving is a holiday where we celebrate family with big dishes. I have some tips on how to go green for this holiday. Tuck in to your turkey with our sustainable Thanksgiving tips.

1.    Finish Leftovers with friends. Because food is the single-largest component of waste ending up in landfills, according the world institute website, which makes landfills the third-largest source of methane emissions in the country. In total, some 133 billion pounds of food is lost or wasted every year.

2.    Use your freezer. Store and recycle food for rainy days. The freezer is particularly good for keeping foods which spoil quicker, such as meat and fish, fresher for longer. So if you end up with food that looks like it’s about to go bad or the date label says it’s coming up on expiration, the freezer can ensure you will be able to enjoy it for longer.
Make Soup. Why buy vegetable broth when you have all the ingredients going into your trash, especially around Thanksgiving when each of us probably generates enough scraps to make a full pot of soup? You can start turning vegetable scraps into scrap soup. Recycle and make a new dish to enjoy.
